2 thought provoking reads

Doug Phillips posts here on "How Loyal Fathers Honorably Correct Sons"

and Doug Wilson writes thought provokingly on developing "An Apology for Feminine Modesty"

one paragraph that caught my eye especially

"A big part of the problem is the sin of abdication—fathers and husbands today are simply not jealous enough. Men must look to Christ and the Church for their pattern because they in turn are representing that pattern. "For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ" (2 Cor. 11:2). Tragically, it cannot go without saying anymore—if the goal is to present a chaste virgin, it should also be a goal to present her looking like a chaste virgin."Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish" (Eph. 5:25-27). A virgin daughter, and a chaste wife, are to be loved and sacrificed for, in order that they might be cleansed, glorious, spotless, without wrinkle, or anything like it, holy, and without blemish. These things mean, among others, that fathers should care very much about whether their daughters look like bed bait. It would be nice to say we don’t have that problem in the Church today—but we do."

Over heard this morning ...

6yo: "Mom what do you want a boy or a girl?"

Mom: "Yes I want either a boy or a girl"

6yo: "I bet you wish it was twins [presumably so she could have a boy and a girl at the same time like Grandma Brown]

Just then I turned to a mix of amusement and not-quite-but-almost-horror crossing the wife's face.

Definitely NOT the question to ask a woman 14 hours after giving birth!

Cool comic book geek stuff

How Kryptonite Works

"Just about everyone who grew up in the United States after the 1940s knows the core truth about kryptonite -- it's bad news for Superman. Most also have an inkling that kryptonite comes in different colors, even if they only heard about those colors on an episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."

But if you ask the right person, you'll find out that numerous varieties of kryptonite have existed over the years, and different iterations of Superman have used them differently. Even if you restrict your question to the comic books, you can get wildly different answers. It all depends on the time period and title you ask about.

So what exactly is kryptonite? Where does it come from, and why is it here? What makes it so dangerous for Superman and other Kryptonians? And what does retcon have to do with it? In this article, you'll learn the answers to these and other questions about the radioactive mineral known as kryptonite. ..."

Coulter did not go far enough

A great quote from the article on WND.com

"
Not only do I have no problem whatsoever with anything Ann Coulter said about the Jersey Girls, I don't think she went far enough in her response to Hillary Clinton about how mean her husband has been to women he once wanted to have sex with. He must have liked them a bunch!

Ann, probably because she's just a petite feminine softy, really should have brought up the Barrett Report. The Barrett Report reveals that several women the President found to be sexually stimulating were audited by the Clintons' IRS. Yep, Gennifer Flowers, Paula Jones, Elizabeth Ward Gracen and Juanita Broaddrick were targeted by audits during the 1990s.

Ann may be considered insensitive by some, but auditing women your husband either assaulted, abused or had sex with is criminal. Nixon never did anything like this.
Where were Woodward and Bernstein on this one? "

Baby guessing contest

My eldest Deanna is having a baby guessing contest over at her blog.

She is looking folks to guess the pertinent facts about the new baby's birth. Go on over and leave her a comment including the:

  • sex of the baby
  • weight
  • date of birth
  • color of hair
  • length
  • weight

Some facts about Coghlan babies that may help you narrow your guesses:

  1. all girls so far
  2. 4 brunnetts at birth
  3. 2 sandy (not quite blondes)
  4. one carrot top at birth
  5. they were 18 to 23 1/2 inches in length
  6. 6 pounds 12 oz to 8 pounds 8 oz in weight

To the extent that judging is subjective my opinion is final. If there is a tie we will flip a coin, draw names from a hat or use some other form of creative lot casting to break the tie.

If the new child is a girl we will send the winner a copy of "So Much More" and if it's a boy we will send a pocket knife with a faux ivory handle and a portrait of Robert E. Lee engraved on it.

Remember go to Deanna's blog HERE to guess and happy guessing.

Playing with guns - Quotes on the Second Amendment

To preserve liberty it is essential that the whole body of people always posses arms, and be taught alike, especially when young how to use them....
-Richard Henry Lee

Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. The are the American people liberty teeth and keystone under independence...From the hour the Pilgrims landed...events, occurrences, and tendencies prove that to ensure peace, security, and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable...The very atmosphere of firearms everywhere restrains evil interference - they deserve a place of honor with all that's good.
-George Washington

Arms in the hands of the citizen may be used at individual discouraged for the defense of the country, the overthrow of tyranny, or private self defense.
-John Adams

A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise, and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks.
