Mr. "Are you ready to change the way you live?" or should I say Mr. "I use 20 times more carbon based energy that the average american"

Yesterday Sen. Daniel Inhofe (one of my new heroes) put an interesting question to Al "Oscar Winner" Gore. He asked him to be consistent with his rhetoric.

Of course Gore refused.

What was it that he asked Mr. "the world is melting"...I mean Gore to do? He asked him to take the following pledge.

· that human-caused global warming is a moral, ethical, and spiritual issue affecting our survival;

· that home energy use is a key component of overall energy use;

· that reducing my fossil fuel-based home energy usage will lead to lower greenhouse gas emissions; and

· that leaders on moral issues should lead by example;

I pledge to consume no more energy for use in my residence than the average American household by March 21, 2008.”

Does this suprise you? Not me not one bit. Statist socialists like Gore are rarely ever willing to lead by example. The top down imposition of regulations for everyone else is inherent to their view of civil power.

Besides moral consistency is hardly a hallmark of modern socialist politics. Just look at his old boss William Jefferson to see what I mean.

So until Mr. Gore is willing to make the painful cuts at his house. Until he is eager to bring this "moral" issue home to roost he needs to pipe down.

In fact until he signs the pledge I respectfully invite him to sit down and shut up.

I love to read, so I am always delighted when I can learn a new word. I was reading a post on Doug Wilson's blog critiquing Richard Dawkins new book "The God Delusion" and I came across the word aseity.

Not being a philosophy major I have never encountered that word before. It's a good word. It's slight - doesn't waste a lot of syllables - kinda gets right to the point.

aseity - what does it mean? Click HERE to read the definitions on the google search I ran but basically its a philosphy term to describe the fact that God is self derived and not derivative.
He exsists on his own with out having been created.

Music worth listening to

Jamie Soles is a Christian father and musician in Alberta Canada.
His website is www.solmusic.ca and his music is top notch in my book.

It tells Bible stories tells, teaches remembrances and glorifies God through Psalms.
We downloaded 2 songs from his webstore tonight $1.75 Canadian (about $1.45 USD) for each song and are looking forward to buying more in the near future.

I mean what's not to love about a guy who has 8 kids and describes his latest album this way:

"There are many things in Scripture spoken of as memorials, things which bring to remembrance - the rainbow, the priestly garments, memorial portions of offerings, Passover, jealousy tests, and ultimately, the Lord’s Supper. Memorials is a musical celebration of God's faithfulness reflected in these signs of remembrance."

Besides this is Scripture and good doctrine presented in such a way that you will be catechising your children and they won't even know it. This is the kind of music that helps parent create a "When you rise up" culture in their home.

I for one need all the help I can get.

We are studying through the book on the right in our Church book study. This week we came to the chapter on the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre. This was the ambush of the French Protestant Church by the French Roman Catholic Royalty.

In the footnotes of the article I found this link that contains a picture of Catherine de Medici (the queen mother who orchestrated the foul murders) as well as a picture of the Papal medal struck in celebration when the news reached the vatican!

I also found the following quote there by Jacques-Auguste de Thou taken from his book called "History of the Bloody Massacres of the Protestants in France in the year of our Lord, 1572"

"...the streets and ways did resound with the noise of those that flocked to the slaughter and plunder, and the complaints and doleful out-cries of dying men, and those that were nigh to danger were every where heard. The carkasses of the slain were thrown down from the windows, the Courts & chambers of houses were full of dead men, their dead bodies rolled in dirt were dragged through the streets, bloud did flow in such abundance through the chanels of the streets, that full streams of bloud did run down into the River: the number of the slain men, women, even those that were great with child, and children also, was innumerable"

It had to have been an incredibly difficult time for the French believers to live through. However God in His good pleasure was working all things together for good.

How?

Well according to Pastor Joe Morecraft in his sermons on the Reformation dealing with this time period this was the beginning of the end of the doctrine of the divine right of kings. The slaughter of the innocents on St Bart's day was the catalyst for the devolpment of anti-tyranical Protestant thinking that led directly to the American War for independence. One of the most influential books just prior to the war was entitled "Vindiciae Contra Tyrannos-A Defense of Liberty Against Tyrants" (the text can be found HERE) published under the penname of "Junius Brutus" it has been attributed to 2 French Protestants and is a clear articulation of the Christian doctrine of resisting tyrants.

Also the mass exodus of the Huguenots from France gave us some of our most famous statesmen. Over 1/3 of our Presidents are reported to have Huguenot ancestry as well has men like Paul Revere, John Jay, Alexander Hamilton, and Davey Crockett.

I'll quit talking now but I recommend you get the book above - It's been a great jumping off point for teaching the kids - and I recommend highly Brother Joe's sermons I link to below on John Knox and the Protestant Reformation (the last sermon deals directly with the Huguenots).

As Dr. Morecraft says in the 4th sermon, to keep from becoming discouraged during our own trials and dark times we must "look to the rock from which we are hewn." We must know what trials our physical and spiritual fathers have faced and how God cared and led them.

A bit of Scrooge and cheer.

On the ride to work I heard it was the anniversary of the release of "A Christmas

Carol" .

It was originally published on December 19, 1843 you can read the Wikipedia article on it HERE. Last year I reminisced about how much I enjoyed Scrooge's unrepentant meanness.

I always get a bit (just a bit) of glee in reading/watching/hearing Scrooges squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, steely eyed glare at the world.

Honestly who else but Ebenezer Scrooge would sit across the room from the GHOST (yes GHOST!) of his long departed and well loved partner and say

"You may
be an undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of
cheese, a fragment of an underdone potato. There's more of
gravy than of grave about you, whatever you are!"

ONLY the "old sinner" himself Mr. Ebenezer Scrooge.

While we may chuckle at Scrooge as he puffs and blows about spending money or the "surplus population" we exalt in him as he sees the light and becomes

"as good a friend, as good a
master, and as good a man, as the good old city knew, or
any other good old city, town, or borough, in the good old
world."

This is the joy of A Christmas Carol for me. The joy of redemption.

This is the joy of true and good art. As man made in the very image of God we are bound in our very beings to try as best we might to mimic our Maker in His creative works.

Granted our works are but a pale imitations of His majestic handiwork but every now and then there is among us one who can really and truly convey a bit of the Creator to his fellow man, and when he does - the joy it brings to mankind is wonderful to behold.

I submit to you Mr. Dickens in this classic work achieves just that.

So come with me as I scrounge up a bit of Scrooge to share and start reflecting on the glorious gift of redemption that we celebrate this Monday.

My wife and I have recently been led by God to give our family’s size over to God’s will (i.e. – no more birth control), and consequently, I’ve been thinking about all the different aspects about having a big family (God willing). That being said, I will definitely be using your blog as a source of wisdom.

My question this time was about homeschooling and extracurricular activities. I want my children to be involved in some activities outside the house, but with so many children, how is that possible? My thought was that our family is going to have to limit it to a couple of organizations such as Boy Scouts and 4H.

What does your family do? Are any of your children involved in any activities or organizations outside the home? Just curious how other large families have handled this.

I had a few thoughts as well.

My reply:

Derek,

As the head of your household you have to look at more than the logistics of getting to and from a lot of activities. That is, assume for a moment that my family had one activity for each of our 8 children outside the home every OTHER week. We would be on the go 4 nights a week.

Take for instance a once a month commitment for each of the kids: that is twice a week, plus wed church meeting for most families and grocery shopping on the one other night.

My point?

Once you have children your job as the father/ head of household is not to give them opportunities - although as a father, who doesn't like to make fun things available to our kids?
Mat 7:9 Or what man is there of you, who, if his son shall ask him for a loaf, will give him a stone;
Mat 7:10 or if he shall ask for a fish, will give him a serpent?
Mat 7:11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father who is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

but your one sacred and holy duty before God when you have children is this ...

Deu 6:3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as Jehovah, the God of thy fathers, hath promised unto thee, in a land flowing with milk and honey.
Deu 6:4 Hear, O Israel: Jehovah our God is one Jehovah:
Deu 6:5 and thou shalt love Jehovah thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
Deu 6:6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be upon thy heart;
Deu 6:7 and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. (emph mine)
See I have to constantly evaluate my family's schedule in light of that command. Before we make commitments, we must as fathers evaluate what impact it will have on my ability to teach the commandments of the Lord to my children (i.e. how will 4h affect my family worship routine).

We must start with first things, like family worship, and move out from there. Once we lay the foundation of a rigorous routine of Scriptural study for our family, then we can try and fit other activities around THAT routine.

If we don't start with the study and application of Scripture as the basis of our Christian family's routine then we will end up as the fathers of old.
